Benefits of Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections

Targeted, Natural Healing

PRP therapy delivers concentrated platelets directly to the site of your injury or pain. This releases growth factors that stimulate tissue repair and regeneration for effective healing.

Non-Surgical and Minimally Invasive

PRP injections are low-risk and minimally invasive. The safe, non-surgical option uses platelets derived from your own blood, so there’s low risk of an allergic reaction or hypersensitivity.

Lasting Results

PRP injections can last for years, helping you avoid surgery and a lengthy recovery time. You may notice results in a few weeks with the full benefits evident in about six weeks.

The PRP Procedure

Step 1: Consultation With Dr. Argyriou

Our double board-certified pain management specialist, Dr. Antigone Argyriou, will perform an exam and talk with you about your symptoms, medical history and lifestyle to determine if you’re a good candidate for PRP therapy. She’ll explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions you have.

Step 2: Blood Draw

When you visit our office for your PRP injection, we’ll draw a small amount of blood and place it in our centrifuge machine. The device spins the blood at a high speed, separating its different components, so we can extract platelets concentrated in plasma (or the liquid part of your blood).

Step 3: PRP Injection

After numbing the treatment area with local anesthetic, Dr. Argyriou will inject the platelet-rich plasma into the joint, tendon, ligament or muscle, releasing a flood of growth factors. This kicks the body’s natural healing response into high gear, speeding up cell turnover and tissue regeneration, leading to a potentially faster recovery, less pain and more mobility.

FAQ

How much are PRP injections?

The cost of PRP injections depends on a number of factors, ranging from the area of the body being treated to your geographic location (for example, a PRP injection on Long Island will probably cost more than it would in a small town somewhere with a lower cost of living).

At our locally owned practice, we provide clear, upfront pricing at your consultation, so there won’t be any surprises.

Do PRP Injections hurt?

Dr. Argyriou will numb the treatment area with a local anesthetic before administering the PRP injection, so it doesn’t hurt. The only thing you’ll feel is a small pinch from the needle when getting the anesthetic.

Does insurance cover PRP injections?

Whether or not your insurance covers PRP therapy depends on the provider. However, some health insurance companies do not cover PRP injections because they label them “experimental.” This is in spite of a growing body of scientific research that supports PRP injections for conditions, including osteoarthritis, rotator cuff injuries, tennis elbow and more.

Unfortunately, what your physician determines is the best way to effectively and safely treat your unique problem doesn’t always align with your insurance company’s policies.

Does Medicare pay for PRP knee injections? That’s another question we get asked a lot. Medicare currently doesn’t cover them. It does, however, cover PRP for “chronic non-healing diabetic, pressure, and/or venous wounds” under certain conditions. So it could change in the future.

The good news is, even if it isn’t covered, you may be able to use funds from a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) for your PRP treatment.

Does PRP treatment have side effects?

Platelet-rich plasma injections consist of your own blood. This means there isn’t a risk for an allergic reaction like there is with other kinds of joint injections. Bruising and soreness around the injection site are the most common PRP side effects.

In rare cases, especially in a non-sterile environment, infection can occur, as can bleeding or a nerve injury. That’s why it’s important to see a licensed physician for care.

Is platelet-rich plasma therapy safe?

Yes, platelet-rich plasma injections, or PRP injections, have been used to treat a range of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries for over 15 years. The regenerative therapy doesn’t involve medication or additives. Instead, components of your own blood are injected into the site of the injury or damage, meaning it won’t elicit an allergic reaction or sensitivity.

By delivering a high concentration of your platelets to the target area, it significantly increases the amount of growth factors at the site. This stimulates a cascade of healing responses inside of your body, merely speeding up the natural recovery process that happens every time you’re injured.

Because the treatment is natural and leverages your own biology, the risks are low. When performed by a licensed physician like Dr. Argyriou, PRP injections have fewer side effects and risks compared to other options like steroid injections.

What is the recovery time after PRP injections?

The treatment is non-surgical, so you can go back to work and most of your day-to-day activities right away. You’ll just want to steer clear of heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for a couple of days.

The injection site might be sore for about 48 hours. Putting ice on it will help!

How long should I wait to exercise after a PRP injection?

Dr. Argyriou will give you after-care instructions that will include when you can get back to sports or your exercise routine. Most patients are able to start with light exercise within a few days, gradually increasing the intensity based on how their injury is feeling.

How many PRP injections do I need?

Additional injections could be needed, depending on your case, where the injury is located and how your body responds to the platelet-rich plasma. A lot of our Long Island PRP patients get excellent results with three injections spaced about a month apart.

What type of doctor does PRP injections?

Don’t just google “PRP injections near me” and choose whatever provider catches your eye. PRP treatment isn’t standardized and the effectiveness depends on the preparation, equipment and physician’s knowledge. Seeing a fully credentialed medical professional is essential.

Dr. Argyriou performs PRP injections for back pain, joint pain and neck pain at our Long Island practice. She is a double-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation and pain medicine physician. Additionally, our facility meets or exceeds all safety standards, and we use state-of-the-art, FDA-approved equipment.
